Postcard from Dubai: Poppy Starr & Taniah Meyers

Poppy Starr & Taniah Meyers are in Dubai about to compete in the World Championships and Olympic qualifier in park skateboarding in Dubai. These women have been competing and travelling together to international competitions more than once throughout the years and we checked in with them to see what they’re up to in Dubai.

Hi Poppy & T! We’ve seen you hang out in Dubai and thought it’d be cool to check in with you guys. How are you doing?

We’re doing good! Been hanging out at the skatepark most days watching all the street skaters and going on little adventures when we can. We just got back from Skating around and looking at gold markets and mosques in the area.

What’s the best and worst food you’ve had in Dubai?

We’ve been going to some little tradition Arabian food places every night and they’ve all been really good so far! The Mango juices are our favourite thing so far and as for the bad dish we haven’t discovered that one yet. There is grilled brains on the menu though.

What have you been up to in between skating?

When we aren’t at the park we try and explore around a little bit and find interesting places and buildings.

Any sight seeing highlights?

A couple days ago we went to the Dubai Mall with Mami Tezuka it was huge. Pretty much had every high-end brand you could ever think of. Plus an aquarium with Sharks & an ice skating rink. After that, we watched a water show underneath the Burj Khalifa.

How’s the atmosphere between the skaters?

Everyone is great, it’s so nice to see the crew again. We all go out to dinner most nights and it’s great fun. It’s also fun watching all the Aussies skate with all the team.

We know you’ve been going to these international comps together for many years now. What do you do to help each other prepare, mentally & physically?

Poppy: For me I just try and have fun and enjoy skating with everyone. Then focus on skating and try and get some lines down in Practise.

T: I just try and feel as confident as I can and stay happy and have fun. I also try and have a little dance in the warm-up to keep it all fun and chill.

Poppy, what’s the best thing about T?

The best thing about T is her attitude towards everything. Doesn’t take herself too seriously and can always make me laugh. There’s more to life and comps than being so serious all the time. The last Olympic qualifier we were at she wore her helmet backwards for the whole comp. That’s T dog.

And Taniah, best thing about Poppy?

The best thing about poppy would be the fact that she is always trying to find games and challenges for us to do when we aren’t skating she definitely keeps it interesting. She;s always down for a bet when we skate together we both set bets with consequences for each other it’s always a laugh.

You two spreading the love. Any other things we should know about your trip?

I think that covered most of it, we’re just trying to find some camels now to ride :) Cheers!

Go find those camels then :-) Thanks legends, we’re all cheering for you from back home.
