PIZZEY PARK OPENING EVENT: FROM HUMBLE ORIGINS TO OLYMPIC SKATEPARK

The day is finally here! On Saturday 30 April the new Olympic standard Street Skate Park on the Gold Coast is officially opening (see info below). On that occasion Pizzey Local Dain Bosworth has documented some current locals and delved into the history books to give Slabzoo’s readers some conversation starters for Saturday… “Did you know Tony Hawk skated here in 1989?”…

Be sure to Check out Dain’s instagramDizzee_skatepics where he documents the skate scene around Pizzey Park.

1969 [official opening, guys, that’s 53 years ago!]

In 1969 the Pizzey Park Sporting Complex located in Miami on the Gold Coast was officially opened.

1987 [the bowl was added]

In 1987 the parks first skate bowl was added. It was constructed by a local swimming pool builder, and although quite gnarly it is still skated today.

1989 [Hawk came to town]

Pizzey Skatepark first gained international recognition when skated in 1988 by Tony Hawk and the Powell-Peralta Bones Brigade. Check out Tony Hawk’s instagram post from his time in the Pizzey Bowl:

Since then: From humble origins to Olympic standards

Since this original single bowl, the skate park has undergone many expansions, and now sports several different bowls, stairs, ledges and rails. You’ll see an array of skate boarders, roller skaters, roller bladers, scooter enthusiasts and BMX riders there.

Today Pizzey is frequented by groms, their families, mentors national and international skaters, and is currently being upgraded to Olympic standards covering 3000 square meters.

It has come a long way from its humble origins as a garbage dump.
